The exploiting of and problems with the 1st amendment

We have to guard against the victors and monied writing history to benefit them and theirs. I compare that to the removal of the statue of Lee in Dallas. If the statue had been about Lee’s time as a soldier fighting Native Americans and Mexicans in Texas then that would at least have been somewhat accurate.
    .
But the fact that there are all these statues around in areas that had little to do with the civil war and were erected decades after the civil war paints the war as a noble cause when in fact it wasn’t. most people could not afford slaves and yet the war was sold to them as someone interfering with their rights. it is the same story I see now.
    .
The rich pay (buying media companies) for the media that says what they want it to say. Then those depending on that media only see that information and don’t have enough information to really look at both sides on any issue.  Example: Hearst and the Spanish American war inflamed to sell newspapers. Now its different in the age of information (and the age of disinformation) but people choose not to listen to both sides choosing instead what the are comfortable with.  This tribal or social group choice goes all the way to our ape progenitors.
    .
But if we look at the base tenants of that communication we can see that it is a true if somewhat bent statement that becomes the basis of a logical progression that then stretches right past facts to move into what people want to believe, or are told what they want to believe (not born out in fact) to have their support.
    ..
The case I make for ‘not born out in fact’ is that we are constantly told the Democrats are tax and spend and will blow the budget and increase the deficit and national debt.  Added to that is the ungodly crime of getting something or support someone else did not get.  If you take that selfishness in the richest country in the world it flies the face of ‘what you do to the least of me, you do to all of me’ or ‘be kind to the stranger for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt’.   Think also of the parent that tells their kids they walked to school through the blizzards uphill both ways, and by God, you will do the same.   Why the hell would any parent not want better for their kids, other than to be jealous that their kids have it better?  So love and charity don’t count when we don’t feel like it even if we are taught different in our religious texts.  Wow.  What do you really believe in?  Just because you had it hard you want to punish your kids for that?   But teaching kids how they have it better and have a bigger responsibility to spread that success and end that misery is a very good lesson.
    .
I digress but it is a very valid point considering the overall picture of how we look at fellow Americans.  It is ALL of us, not we versus them.
    .
The deficit came down during President Obama’s administration for all the sequestrations. In of itself that was probably responsible. But since the next administration spent money an increased the deficit and debt with their tax cut (bribing us with our own money) the only logical conclusion I can make is that the whole goal was to make the other guys look bad while we hold the country hostage to get back into power. Hurt someone to get them to come to us for change.
    .
Another example of that kind of action is how President Nixon secretly negotiated during the peace talks to extend the Vietnam war so he could promise he would end the war at the cost of many lives on both sides of the conflict. (and now the never ending war in Iraq and Afghanistan)  Many died for his machiavellian plan.
    .
Then to show the fiscal conservancy endlessly prattled on as a goal President Trump’s administration they demonstrated the exact opposite of that stated goal with its huge tax cut adding a trillion to the national debt.  The lion’s share of the public got a few crumbs off the plate while the monied got a considerable hunk of meat.
    .
In the never ending cycle the monied took a slice of that roast and tossed it to their media and elected officials in the way of contributions. Those self same will then spread the gospel of who buys them. That then rewrites history, provides alternate facts, ignores significant problems and spreads a true lack of empathy.  Nothing really new if you look at the previous incidents I have included.
    .
Half the population is encouraged (both sides) to see the other side is the devil and that is why we have this McConnell and Pelosi (both very effective politicians) called the devil by the other side ignoring how they do represent their constituency. If we drop the personal rancor of righteous indignation, insult and threats to people’s lives by extremists, then perhaps we could return to the era of Reagan and O’neill who held far different views but were friends after hours.
    .
The older politicians lamented the loss of being able to visit after hours with fellow politicians across the aisle when Gingrich started the era of hardball politics followed by statements like ‘you are either with us, or against us’ as quoted by Bush 2 which was based on 911 but extended into any differences.  The party liked it because they were tough and going after the ‘bad guys’.
    .
Solving this problem is not term limits which puts the same mask on the next guy, but instead, to have balanced districts (our most recent presidential election) where the voice of the people end up choosing the their candidate.  The candidate can’t pander to extreme positions that alienate the majority of voters.
    .
Next would be to remove money from politics. Could start that with a broadcast license having required time for political messages just as we had with children’s educational programs which was a requirement that was eventually dropped.  Make Freedom of speech — free — and available.  (like I am doing here thanks to the Daily Kos (don’t forget to tip your server))
    .
But these solutions would be very hard to enact. First each party would have to deal with the loss of safe districts and that is not likely to happen. Next you would have to actually have balanced districts in a country that had red lining of neighborhoods, which was eliminated by law, but still around in practice.
    .
Then the next problem is the freedom of speech issue. Truly to have real freedom of speech you have to have money to buy time/space in the media or you are not heard. That cost now has shifted to the social media platform. And with those platforms desperate to show ridership and keep you on line as much as possible for their own business.  We got algorithms that only show us what the system deems will hold us on line the longest by what we look at.  That started under the guise of bandwidth and eliminating information from friends you would just scan and not interact with.  Too many posts would put people off because they could not see everything, nor be driven into specific groups.  Advertisers then sell trucks and guns to the right and kale and hemp tote bags to the left.  😛
    .
That then resulted in use of the platform (whose use you agree to use under their rules) which then put you ‘with your own kind’ and thus was effective in spreading the word to extremists and adding people to those groups for the sole reason to keep them online to make money. The platforms claim freedom of speech for their users when it is freedom to make money and by their own rules do not have to let anyone speak in ANY forums.  They drove people into these camps simply to keep people on line to squeeze advertisers.
    .
Only when there was sufficient public outcry did they slowly start to move in the right direction by eliminating crackpots and rooting out ‘bots’ spewing propaganda and cheap labor from other countries putting out whatever to influence our elections as desired by their political or monied masters. People did little to verify that tripe as true or false and the platform fed them more and more further driving people into their camps.  I came back to those memes with signed dated and linked articles doing my own fact check only to be ignored because I did not say what they wanted to hear and that was made a virtue with the insane concept of ‘fake news’ and ignoring of science and unchangeable fact.
    .
Finally after the President Trump enflamed the insurrectionist charge on the capital by the drunken spew and vomit from an uneasy civilization, the monied, knowing that instability is bad for business finally did what the politicians were too cowardly to do (although a few put country and law and order before party) and withdrew their ‘votes’ by cutting off funding to those supporting idiotic baseless conspiracy theories that were beneath us as a nation.
    .
And the withdrawal of that money, as in the past which bought media bias, now seeks to move us back to the common sense center, or at least punishes those supporters of lunacy, to stabilize the country as instability is bad for business while claiming the high road.
    .
It is important to realize that both sides want to do what is right for America and their base of information is what is presented to them and what they believe in without having that dinner of Reagan and O’neill where issues can be discussed.  And to their credit, social media then started adding the other side or calling out propaganda with posts to fact checks.  And the laughable part was that President Trump, the biggest snowflake of all time, woofed about his freedom of speech being taken away from him by having his lies fact checked.  The very self same freedom of speech he used to lie and is anyone’s right to lie.  Otherwise where would poor Alex Jones be today…
    .
Disagreement is fine but Disrespect is not.
    .
But how we fix this mess is beyond my ken.  I have a few suggestions as noted, but I am not sure what the results would be.   I suppose if the system is smart enough to keep us on, then it could be smart enough for some character recognition of text on memes to also provide signed dated and linked articles on the subject.
    .
I am especially sensitive to the meme thing because the nazi posters of the late 30s helped send 6 million of my people up the chimneys.  Who is to say that won’t happen again?
